We are a Custom Cabinet Shop that specializes in making the best possible
Custom Cabinets.
Good Cabinet casings are made from plywood. The Doors can have solid wood, but
the Casings are going to usually be plywood if they are quality casings.
There is also a difference in types of plywood. Typical Plywood is 5 ply, while
the plywood we use is Furniture Grade 9 ply with no voids.
The construction of the case is also very important. We build the case with the
End Panels full length to the floor and never use a "toe box" for the cabinet
to sit on.
An Example of what the normal "5 ply" Plywood looks like from the end is shown below.
Inferior Cabinet casings are made out of pressboard and that is why we never use Pressboard.
The problem with pressboard is at least two fold.
1. If exposed to water, they have a very good likelyhood of "swelling" and losing their
structural integrity.
2. When using screws, the pressboard material has a tendency to brake instead of just expanding
around the screw and making a nice secure fit.
Also, the inferior cabinets will usually be built on a "toe box". If Granite is ever used
on this cabinet, then the overhang weight on the bottom pressboard sheet can eventually
cause sag and even worse.
Examples of what Pressboard cabinets look like is show in the two pictures below.
